The Divide Between Black and Latino Americans. What is the main reason?

Being a fellow kid in the new millennium made me witness unions between latino and black americans. You saw it everywhere from Jennifer Lopez and Ja rule to Wyclef and Shakira. It was like black americans were essential to be connected to latino americans because we shared so many similarities when it came to being on the outs of society or even being racially profiled by a police officer. Who would've thought that these two groups still have problems regardless of how similar they are?
Nowadays, black men love to seek spanish women that look European. This affects the black woman as a whole because deep down we feel as if we can't compete with that. The media continues to make black women feel unattractive. Which causes low self esteem when their men date outside their race. It has gotten so bad to the point that black men praise and worship spanish women while disrespecting their own. Since this is happening, more tension between the two groups has formed within the bases of being pushed to the side. A lot of spanish women who look European tend to take opportunities that stem from the black community.
Like Jennifer Lopez for example, her using hip hop and street fashion to start up her career shows what spanish women who look more European can get away with things that black women can’t. The fact that she out of all people was chosen to do a Motown tribute instead of women within the culture. Just shows how much the people within the industry could care less with black women representation. I also connect this with people who complain about Bruno mars culture appropriation. With his image, he can choose to be black whenever he feels like it.
I personally can see the problem as a black female whenever I look deeper within the issue. We all want to have a perfect image of minorities working together against a press system. But in reality, it is not the case. There is a divide that is keeping both communities to come together. One of the main reasons is pure racism. Having light skin with European features and a curvaceous body is the ideal image for a Latino. When they see a latino that looks the complete opposite, It reminds them of the struggle that they do not want to face.
People who are dark skin or black period get treated terribly in Latin America. Some latinos with white privilege engage in the activity of racism towards dark skin latinos.
Since they do not have african ancestry, They feel as if they are better than the ones who do. Which raises a lot of eyebrows when white latinos borrow from black culture. They feel as if latino people who disrespect black people take stuff from their culture to survive. Which makes black americans separate themselves from the latinos.
I can understand that because black people, feel used on a daily. But don't feel like they get treated fairly. Since this is an acquiring theme, black people still raise people outside of their race to a certain caliber. This is why it gives black women specifically a reason to not favor black men seeking those types of latinas. They know what they come with and don't feel like she respects the black culture enough. In reality, latinos want to be accepted to a high standard since the black image doesn't fit that, they will do anything to keep it that way.
They have for years kept black latinos off of there spanish speaking networks because of the negative image of the black community itself. Since latinos deal with white americans telling them to speak English or go back to their country by force, they are not looking forward to adding another type of struggle. Which is understandable because who wants to struggle to face obstacles like minorities do? Nobody.
Since that is the case, latinos got to get in where they fit in. Does that mean making someone else feel bad because they prefer to be themselves? Exactly, so even though I understand to a certain extent, it is still not an excuse. Which is why this void between the two groups is unnecessary. The discrimination from it all needs to stop.
Before you get your panties in a bunch, I’m not saying all latinos act this way. Just some who have been brainwashed by white supremacy. It is a problem because they are spreading that mentality around the community. When that mentality spreads, cruel activities are being done on innocent people. Like Trayvon Martin, for example, he was an innocent boy with skittles in his hand that got shot for no reason. By who you ask? By a white and indigenous latino who felt he was doing white americans justice.
That can be a problem because any black boy that looks similar to Trayvon Martin might get his life taken as well. This becomes a reflection towards the anti-blackness within the latino community and what can we do to put a stop to it. If we see the ugliness between the two groups, hopefully, we can try our best to clean it up. If we try our best to learn from one another, we can break down the wall between us. We cannot make a change unless we change ourselves.

  1. Wow! I applaud you touching really deep and heated topics on your blog, and the topic of this post is definitely one of them. As black woman I relate to what you are saying. I also wish that we could break down the walls between our communities. I wish we could all see how beautiful diversity is. No group is better than another. Our differences should be embraced and celebrated. It’s a shame really.
